The Roc Fund began its existence, as a champion of loyalty and a loved canine, lost his life to Epil-K9.  A much loved family member , Roc meant a great deal to us, his good friends, and was always involved with us, both inside the house and going for rides in the truck, surrounded by the beauty of the North West where we adopted him from (King County Animal Shelter).  We lost him due to complications from his medicine for Epil-K9, and in our opinion as well, from the lack of professional veterinarian management of his case. More details will be available in the 'Support' Tab at the top of this page, but for a introduction into what happened we offer the following:

Roc was on a DelMonte Vegetarian Recipe canine food ( similar to this: http://www.naturesrecipe.com/dog-food/easy-digestion/fish-and-potato-recipe ), as  at the time, felt it was a high quality food, but that later turned out to be very problematic on a few fronts; A lot of dogfood has a  factory stamp on the package supposedly noting that it's AAFCO certified, but as it turns out there is no Federal oversight for this organization . Secondly, one of  ingredients ( there are others) called Menadione, isn't even allowed in Human food, yet there it was in Roc's food. We had no idea about this when we offered information to our vets that he was on this specific food, yet no reaction of any kind was offered from our Vet. We were told Roc passed on from supposed complications ( liver was in very bad shape ) from his Epilepsy medication, but we were never  warned about this Menadione and the fact that there are no long term studies proving it safe for animal food . We were outraged to learn of these facts , in conjunction with what the vet's office told us, in that they supposedly don't make note of 'dog food' in patient charts. There are several websites ,clearly noting that Menadione , while it 'may' be safe due to the small quantities contained in some animal food, that it's most definitely  not recommended for several reasons: Here are a few websites that make this clear or at the very least can't find proof for its safety and therefore cast significant doubt on it:

http://www.dog-nutrition-advice.com/menadione-in-dog-food.html

Given  those facts, we felt very personally betrayed that the vet's office were more worried about not 'noting' supposedly insignificant information in  Roc's chart, instead of taking the safe and concerned route, and letting us know, and letting US make the decision ourselves whether or not to buy other food without that ingredient. The doctors don't have the luxury of making those decisions for us; and you , the consumer and guardian of your companion animals, deserve to know this. You the Guardian, deserve to also know that the Veterinarian involved was: Alpine Animal Hospital in Issaquah , WA.  Through the initial stages of grief, we decided to not let our companion die in vain, but to be a stalwart of justice for him, by making positive changes in the world that reflect the loyalty our companions represent, the quality food they deserve to remain healthy and happy by,  and to assist their guardians with Vet bills, when they struggle to pay for services, through either poverty or very high vet bills.

Putting aside all those things momentarily, this site was born out of the unconditional love given and received , by a companion dog named Roc. In the words of "Marley & me', which I finally had a chance to watch , brought on by loving Roc and 'dogs' in general, these words clearly convey meaning to why 'The Roc Fund' was started:

"  The dog has no use for fancy cars, or big homes, or designer clothes; a water logged stick will do just fine.  A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, clever or dull , smart or dumb.  Give him your heart, and he'll give you his.  How many people can you say that about ? How many people can make you feel rare and pure, and special ? How many people can make you feel extraordinary ?  "

We all care about our companion animals, and the more we know about the world around us and the companies and organizations that make up that landscape, the better prepared all of us are in giving the kind of care our beloved companions deserve. Unconditional love should be met with unconditional care and love and to that end we will continue offering educational and instructive materials to you to keep your friends and ours, save from harm.

"  But the basis  of my vegetarianism is not physical, but moral. If anybody
said that I should die if I did not take beef tea or mutton, even on
medical advice,  I would prefer death. That is the basis of my
vegetarianism.  "
